Tasting Notes

Tasting Note

Offering a distinctive wine each vintage, the 2017 Ne Cede Malis is elegant with incredible concentration, complexity and nuance. Revealing layers of blackberry, black currant and brambleberry fruit alongside more savory notes of fresh wild chaparral herbs of mint, lavender and sage, supported by an exotic black pepper and anise seed spice. This single block blend is the purest expression of this extraordinary vineyard, exhibiting a multilayered full, mouth-coating velvety-soft texture showcasing the age and character of the oldest vines on our estate. All finishing with incredible depth, plushness and an alluring elusive character. Inviting in its youth but also meant for age-worthiness, decanting is suggested to allow the flavors to evolve and reveal the wines complexity, grace and elegance.

    Wine Advocate

“Composed from 100% Petite Sirah, the 2017 Petite Sirah Ne Cede Malis was aged for 17months in American oak, 28% new. Sporting a very deep purple-black color, it takes a little swirling and coaxing before it comes charging out of the glass with pronounced notions of stewed plums, boysenberries and blueberry pie plus hints of Chinese five spice, dried rose petals, chocolate box and vanilla pod with a waft of menthol. The full-bodied palate completely coats the mouth with spice-spiked black fruit preserves, framed by firm yet approachable tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long with a whole myriad of opulent flavors. This is a Petite Sirah lover's paradise! 781 cases were made.” - Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW

    Wine & Spirits

“Planted in 1929 at the Stags’ Leap estate, this five-acre block is a mix of 16 varieties, focused primarily on petite sirah. Often restrained in style, the 2017 vintage brought up the volume in this wine, a big, plush red that builds on its spice notes as it opens with air. The satin texture reveals scents of cracked peppercorns, from pink to green and black. There’s also an herbal note of thyme over the flavor of dried cherries. Serve it with roast goose for an historical perspective on food and wine.” - Josh, Greene

Winemaking

Winemaking Note

Taking a minimalist approach Winemaker Christophe Paubert likes to say that he “guides” rather than “makes” Ne Cede Malis. The carefully tended head trained vines in this 5-acre single block include Petite Sirah, Carignane, Mourvedre, Grenache, Peloursin, Syrah and even Muscat and Sauvignon Blanc, among others. After hand picking, the grapes were co-fermented, undergoing a short maceration prior to aging in American oak barrels (28% new) for 17 months. The oak’s spiciness, which could overwhelm a delicate wine, is easily handled and helps enhance the strength and depth of this powerful variety.

Christophe Paubert - Winemaker

For Christophe Paubert, Winemaker and General Manager at Stags’ Leap Winery, the identity of a wine is found through the terroir. Christophe’s career has spanned the industry from sales to winemaking, and his impressive background includes positions at Chateau d’Yquem and Gruaud-Larose as well as projects in Chile, Spain and Washington State. But it was the terroir of Stags’ Leap that drew him to California.

Vintage

Vintage Note

The 2017 vintage in the Napa Valley was smaller yielding but high in quality. The region enjoyed much needed rain during the winter months ending the drought. A short period of warmer than usual temperatures during Labor Day weekend accelerated harvest for early ripening grapes varieties, resulting in an intense and, at times, unpredictable harvest. Though yields were lower than usual, the wines show exceptional flavor intensity and conditions were perfect for producing a wine with beautiful fruit as well as tremendous concentration of flavors, highly saturated color, and layers of complexity.

Vineyard Note

NE CEDE MALIS (pronounced Ne KAY Day Mah LEES) comes from the Latin phrase “Don’t give in to misfortune,” the family motto of Stags’ Leap founder Horace Chase. Sourced from the oldest block on our Estate with vines planted in 1929, the wine is predominantly Petite Sirah, though it includes at least 15 other varietals in small amounts. Year after year this gracefully aging block produces a small lot of wine – a truly unique field blend that simply could not be produced anywhere else.
