Tasting Notes

The 2019 Audentia is truly exemplary of the distinctive personality of our estate vineyard, exhibiting a beautifully crafted wine with complexity, depth, and intensity. The wine unfolds with plentiful layers of ripe, dark berry fruits on the nose and palate, featuring dark cherry, blackcurrant, and black plum, supported by more nuanced notes of dark chocolate, black licorice, and pencil shavings. Bold, rich, and opulent, with a creamy mouthfeel and well-integrated grippy tannins that lead to a long, espresso-like savory finish. Incredible balance throughout, supported by the fresh acidity and a subtle delicate mint character. This Cabernet is generous and full-bodied, a signature of the iconic character and longevity that is synonymous with Stags’ Leap estate wines. Approachable and refined upon release yet guaranteed to age gracefully for many years to come, due to the spectacular tannin structure and purity of fruit.

“Made solely from the estate's Block 11—a limited-vigor site that consistently delivers smaller berries and clusters—the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Audentia delivers notes of cassis, mocha, cinnamon and a hint of redder fruit in the raspberry-cherry spectrum. Full-bodied, velvety and rich, there's lots of concentration and structure here but still plenty of fruit to stand up to the 72% new French oak.” - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, September 2022

Vintage

The 2019 harvest started one to two weeks later than previous years, mostly due to February rains, but because the vines were in their winter dormancy, it did not affect the 2019 crop. Spring continued to be wet with some rain during flowering, followed by cool temperatures that allowed the grapes to mature gradually. Most grapes ripened at lower sugars, thanks to the extended, cool growing season, and winemakers were pleased with the full flavors, fresh acidity, and superb balance of the 2019 fruit. The resulting crop showed a modest yield with a slightly more compact structure and extract than in previous years.

Vineyard

The marriage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot in this extraordinary estate wine highlights the rich heritage of the property, and natural lineage of the Estate, as well as the balance of power and finesse between each of these varietals. Cabernet Sauvignon has a longstanding history as the Stags Leap District’s signature varietal, and the district’s unique location, where erosion from the palisades has become the source of its volcanic soils, creating a distinctive characteristic, now synonymous with the modern reputation for Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignons. Cabernet lots were hand-selected from a singular expanse of our estate vineyards that features thin, rocky soils in its upper reaches, giving way to finer-grained loamy soils at its floor.
