Tasting Notes

The 2021 Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon is vibrant and layered, with a beautiful freshness, thanks to the intentional earlier picking of the fruit and the relatively cooler appellation sourcing within Napa Valley. This vintage presents a fragrant nose with boisterous red berry fruits, delicate hints of cinnamon, and a floral lavender perfume. Deep garnet in color with amethyst undertones, the wine is rich and multilayered. On the palate, there is a beautiful vibrancy alongside firm textured tannins. Lovely red cherry fruit, accompanied by primary red currant and black raspberry, leads the entry, complimented by baking spice notes on the finish - a nod to the interplay of oak. Savory, chewy, and robust notes are present throughout, giving the wine lively ripe character with intensity and depth. Secondary notes of subtle tea leaf, bay laurel, and soft violet compliment the fruit and leave a long, indelible impression.

“Perfumed and deeply integrated aromas of blackberry compote, cassia bark, blackcurrants and tobacco leaves. The palate is full-bodied with fine tannins and balanced acidity, giving flavors of plums, sage, mocha and cured meat. Very well balanced and tightly wound. Drink or hold.” – JamesSuckling.com, January 2025

"From the southern, cooler part of the appellation, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville is deep ruby/purple-hued with a more Bordeaux-like nose of darker currants, sappy, green tobacco, cedar pencil, and forest floor. It's medium to full-bodied and has good concentration, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It certainly has a green, herbal undertone, yet it holds it together, and I suspect it will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and age gracefully for well over a decade.” – JebDunnuck.com, January 2025

Winemaking

This small bottling of Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon is a barrel selection of the most expressive lots from this highly regarded appellation. Each component of this blend was aged separately in French oak barrels (59% new) for 18 months and blended just prior to bottling. Custom-toasted, very low impact barrels of new French oak were hand-selected, which supported the wine during maturation but did not impart excessive flavors. Keeping the lots separate throughout aging allowed our winemakers to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each to its maximum potential and complexity. The winemakers also take special care in the management of extraction during the maceration period to keep this wine a very concentrated and approachable Cabernet, truly expressive and representative of the Coombsville terroir.

Vintage

The 2021 season was joyous and welcomed, producing exceptionally high-quality fruit, some of the best in recent years. Rain early in the year led to almost no notable precipitation for the rest of the season, providing an ideal environment for grapes to flower, bloom, and set in early spring, with budbreak early in April, followed by flowering and bloom in May. The summer saw early and even ripening throughout the valley, with veraison appearing in early July. Low yields (in part due to drought conditions), created fruit that is intensely flavored and smaller in berry size. One of the earliest starts, harvest began with white wine grapes coming in towards late July, while red wine grapes arrived about a month later, at the end of August. With optimal ripening and taste, our winemakers took their time bringing grapes in, crafting wines of fantastic character, with amazing color extraction, aromatic intensity, tremendous balance, and structure, that are equally lush and fruity. A tremendous year to taste the nuances and terroir distinction from around the valley.

Vineyard

Our winemakers have always admired the Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from Coombsville for its concentration and fresh aromatics, referring to it as “the Pauillac” of Napa Valley. Year after year the appellation yields some of the most concentrated and distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley, with the 2012 vintage marking the inaugural release of this small-lot bottling. This wine captures a pure expression of Napa’s southeastern corner and its unique elevation and cooler terroir. Most of the blend comes from Garvey Vineyard, and long-standing relationships with some of the most highly regarded growers in Coombsville, ensure this wine exemplifies the excellent structure, concentrated fresh flavors and significant tannins of this celebrated appellation.
