Tasting Notes

Captivates with a fragrant nose of bramble berry fruit, freshly baked blackberry pie, boysenberry, black plum, and black cherry cobbler, with hints of graham cracker crust, lifted lavender, and thyme. Voluptuous, vibrant, and lithe with juicy acidity that accentuates the abundant dark berry fruit. Sinewy, firm tannins lend a viscous texture, while the long and punchy finish leaves a lasting impression. Balanced and beautiful, this Petite Sirah shows restraint and elegance, with subtle oak integration.

“Lots of blackberry, stone and ink aromas that follow through with blackberry, blueberry, and boysenberry notes. Medium- to full-bodied with plenty of flavor but not overdone. Shows balance and beauty. Drink or hold.” —James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, January 2024

Winemaking

Continuing the same time-honored techniques that have made Petite Sirah one of our winery’s staples, our winemakers practiced simple and traditional methods to show the uniqueness of the Petite Sirah fruit. Avoiding over-extraction, the wine went through a relatively short maceration period (9–12 days on average) that included fermentation. The wine aged for 15 months in American oak barrels (19% new), allowing the spiciness of the oak to complement the natural spice character of the varietal. The final blend included small amounts of Grenache, Syrah, and other mixed Rhone varietals for added complexity.

Vintage

The 2021 season was joyous, producing exceptionally high-quality fruit. Rain early in the year led to almost no notable precipitation for the rest of the season, providing an ideal environment for grapes to flower, bloom, and set. Summer saw early and even ripening, with veraison appearing in early July. Low yields created small, intensely flavored berries. Harvest began with white wine grapes in late July—one of the earliest starts. Red wine grapes came in about a month later. With optimal ripening and taste, we took our time bringing grapes in and crafting wines of fantastic character with amazing color extraction, aromatic intensity, tremendous balance, and structure that’s equally lush and fruity.

Vineyard

Grapes from the vineyards located on our estate’s deep, rocky soils make up the backbone of this Napa Valley Petite Sirah. Carefully selected fruit from northern vineyards in Calistoga and St. Helena, and southern vineyards in Oakville, Oak Knoll, and Coombsville, as well as our own Stags Leap District were added to intensify and broaden the wine’s profile with floral, spice, and fruit characteristics.
