Tasting Notes

The 2021 Ne Cede Malis is elegant and complex, with bold dark berry fruits and a refreshing minty note on the nose. Ripe raspberries blend with herbal undertones and a hint of camphor, reminiscent of soothing lip balms. The palate is rich and layered, offering red and brown fruit notes with soft raisins and a cranberry-like tartness. Toasted oak and dark chocolate add depth, while velvety, chewy tannins introduce a myrrh-like earthiness, enhancing the wine's structure and balance.

Winemaking

Taking a minimalist approach, our winemakers like to say that they “guide” rather than “make” Ne Cede Malis. The carefully tended, head-trained vines in this 5-acre single block include Petite Sirah, Carignane, Mourvedre, Grenache, Peloursin, Syrah, Muscat, and Sauvignon Blanc, among others. After hand-picking, the grapes were co-fermented, undergoing a short maceration prior to aging in American oak barrels (48% new) for 14 months. The oak’s spiciness is easily handled by this powerful wine, enhancing it strength and depth.

Vintage

The 2021 season was joyous and welcomed, producing exceptionally high-quality fruit, some of the best in recent years. Rain early in the year led to almost no notable precipitation for the rest of the season, providing an ideal environment for grapes to flower, bloom, and set in early spring, with budbreak early in April, followed by flowering and bloom in May. The summer saw early and even ripening throughout the valley, with veraison appearing in early July. Low yields (in part due to drought conditions), created fruit that is intensely flavored and smaller in berry size. One of the earliest starts, harvest began with white wine grapes coming in towards late July, while red wine grapes arrived about a month later, at the end of August. With optimal ripening and taste, our winemakers took their time bringing grapes in, crafting wines of fantastic character, with amazing color extraction, aromatic intensity, tremendous balance, and structure, that are equally lush and fruity. A tremendous year to taste the nuances and terroir distinction from around the valley.

Vineyard

“Ne cede malis,” Latin for “Don’t give in to misfortune,” is the family motto of Stags’ Leap Founder Horace Chase. Sourced from the oldest block on our estate with vines planted in 1929, the wine is predominantly Petite Sirah with small amounts of at least 15 other varietals. Year after year this gracefully aging block produces a small lot of wine – a truly unique field blend that simply could not be produced anywhere else.
