Tasting Notes

An inviting bouquet of warm spices and sweet oak is complemented by hints of mint and sage that add complexity and depth. Layers of red berries—raspberry, red currant, and blackberry—interweave with notes of vanilla, clove, and a cinnamon-spiced woodsy perfume. Floral undertones of red rose, violet, and potpourri add a delicate, aromatic lift. On the palate, sweet red berry fruits take the lead, followed by plush black cherry and blackberry flavors. The body is on the lighter side, showing the character of this vintage and allowing nuanced layers to shine through. Delicate hints of tea leaf and potpourri emerge mid-palate, leading to a silky finish accented by allspice and lasting floral and oak-driven notes. This is the perfect wine for a variety of dishes and social occasions.

“Aromas of blackcurrants, blueberries, tobacco leaves and dried herbs. The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and balanced acidity. Very well constructed and fresh. Drink or hold.” – JamesSuckling.com, January 2025

Winemaking

The first several weeks of a wine’s life are crucial. While the grapes for this wine were undergoing fermentation and maceration, our winemaking team tasted and tested each lot daily to determine the pump-over regime, how much air the wine needed, and the best temperature to optimize maceration and extraction. After pressing off the skins for 3 –4 weeks, 25% of the wine went into new French oak barrels while the remainder went to seasoned neutral French and American oak; this combination preserves freshness and gives the fruit more room to express itself. The wine aged for 19 months prior to bottling.

Vintage

The first half of the 2022 harvest started calm and early, with healthy vineyards offering fruit with bright acidity, fruit-forward flavors, and strong yields for white varietals and thin-skinned reds, like Pinot Noir. Then, California experienced a historic heat wave in early September that ramped up the pace of ripening, compelling a fast and furious harvest as winemakers worked to pick fruit at its best quality. Fortunately, strong vines and proactive irrigation helped many vineyards survive the heat. The second half was much more predictable with cooler temperatures through October, so that later- ripening red varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, could develop their full flavor and tannin profile.

Vineyard

Cabernet Sauvignon is synonymous with Napa Valley and has always been a mainstay in the winemaking program at Stags’ Leap Winery. Our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a combination of grapes from select Napa Valley growers with a focus on sourcing from the valley floor. Our winemaker selects fruit that is similar in expression to the grapes from the Stags’ Leap estate, avoiding fruit from areas he considers too warm, instead sourcing grapes from the southern part of Napa Valley, where the climate is cooler. This strategic sourcing ensures the focus and character for which Stags’ Leap Cabernet Sauvignons are known.
