2022 Stags' Leap Napa Valley Viognier

2022 Stags' Leap Napa Valley Viognier

2022 Stags' Leap Napa Valley Viognier

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Viognier is true to the vintage with vibrant acidity and a delicate straw color with flecks of shimmering lemon yellow. On the nose, fragrant notes of honeysuckle, elderflower, and hints of wet stone minerality sit alongside notes of green apple, fresh cut hay, candied white peach and lime zest. Like a wildflower bouquet from a pastoral field, this Viognier is bright, fresh, and lively. The mouthfeel is clean and linear with a backbone of crisp mouthwatering acidity. Showcasing a light to medium body, the palate is delicate and soft with notes of white peach, Granny Smith apple and tangy lime supported by subtle Marcona almond notes, and a white pepper spiced finish that is long and pleasing. Lip-smacking and perfectly quaffable on its own as an aperitif or an ideal accompaniment to lighter fare and charcuterie, you’re invited to return over and over, enjoying sip after sip.

“Aromas of Meyer lemons, yellow cherries, apricots and white roses followed by honeycomb and sliced ginger with an underlying seashell and saline minerality to it. Medium-bodied, soft acidity and a hint of phenolics in the mid-palate. Beautiful exotic notes without heaviness. Nice drinkability and freshness. Drink now.” —James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com

Winemaking

The beauty of Viognier is captured in its freshness, and the traditional techniques used by our winemakers to preserve that splendor. The wine is fermented in neutral French oak barrels to allow the fruit character to shine and then aged on the lees and stirred every week for four months, adding texture and depth. This wine does not go through malolactic fermentation which helps to preserve the delicate floral aromas, fruit freshness and balanced acidity.

Vintage

The first half of the 2022 harvest started calm and early, with healthy vineyards offering fruit with bright acidity, fruit-forward flavors, and strong yields for white varietals and thin-skinned reds, like Pinot Noir. Then, California experienced a historic heat wave in early September that ramped up the pace of ripening, compelling a fast and furious harvest as winemakers worked to pick fruit at its best quality. Fortunately, strong vines and proactive irrigation helped many vineyards survive the heat. The second half was much more predictable with cooler temperatures through October, so that later-ripening red varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, could develop their full flavor and tannin profile.

Vineyard

Our Viognier is sourced from select vineyards in the Carneros and Oak Knoll AVAs. Located in the southern part of Napa Valley, these cooler vineyards are optimal for growing Viognier, providing sufficient sun exposure for ripening and cool marine fog for maintaining natural acidity. The Viognier planted at these Carneros and Oak Knoll vineyards showcase flavor complexity and refined aromatic expression, ideal for our bottling.
