Tasting Notes

Although a deep, lustrous garnet color, the 2022 Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon reflects a spectrum of red, blue, and black fruit in the glass. Its beautifully expressive red plum, cherry, and wild strawberry aromas closely embrace herbal, arid notes of Napa Valley chaparral on the nose. Fruit-forward in character, the palate is vibrant and juicy with red plum, fresh fig, blackberry, and black currant flavors spiced with clove and nutmeg. Well-integrated oak gives this wine its elegant structure and depth, while stunningly silky tannins balance its bright acidity mid-palate to usher in a lifted, lengthy finish with finesse.

Winemaking

This Cabernet Sauvignon is a barrel selection of the most expressive lots from the Yountville appellation. It was aged in French oak barrels (47% new) for 21 months and blended just prior to bottling. Keeping the lots separate throughout fermentation and aging allowed Winemaker Ludovic Dervin to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each to its maximum potential and complexity.

Vintage

The first half of the 2022 harvest started calm and early, with healthy vineyards offering fruit with bright acidity, fruit-forward flavors, and strong yields for white varietals and thin-skinned reds, like Pinot Noir. Then, California experienced a historic heat wave in early September that ramped up the pace of ripening, compelling a fast and furious harvest as winemakers worked to pick fruit at its best quality. Fortunately, strong vines and proactive irrigation helped many vineyards survive the heat. The second half was much more predictable with cooler temperatures through October, so that later-ripening red varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, could develop their full flavor and tannin profile.

Vineyard

Cabernet Sauvignon is synonymous with Napa Valley and has always been a mainstay in the winemaking program at Stags’ Leap Winery. Our Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon is a combination of grapes from select growers with a focus on sourcing from the valley floor. Here the alluvial fan soils encourage vines to root deeply to find water. A few feet of topsoil cover a defined bed of cobblestones mixed with gravel, which provide enough stress to keep the grapes desirably small. The grapes achieve exceptionally thick and flavorful skins, which yield a rich, highly extracted wine.
